The Claim

A Facebook post claims that applying a mixture of baby oil and vitamin E capsule oil on the face can erase wrinkles permanently and reverse signs of ageing naturally.

Vitamin E removes wrinkles

Fact Check

Wrinkles are a natural part of ageing and develop due to changes occurring deep within the skin. Despite the popularity of homemade skincare remedies, no topical DIY mixture has been scientifically proven to permanently remove wrinkles. Although baby oil and vitamin E may leave the skin feeling softer and smoother for a short period, they do not address the biological changes responsible for wrinkle formation.

Can this DIY blend permanently remove wrinkles?

No. Baby oil and vitamin E capsules cannot permanently remove wrinkles.

Wrinkles form because the skin gradually loses collagen and elastin, two structural proteins responsible for keeping it firm, elastic, and resilient. With advancing age, collagen production slows down while existing collagen fibres begin to break down. Repeated facial expressions, years of ultraviolet (UV) exposure, pollution, smoking, hormonal changes, and reduced skin cell turnover further accelerate this process.

These structural changes occur within the deeper layers of the skin. Oils applied to the surface cannot penetrate deeply enough to rebuild collagen or restore elastin.

Many people notice that their skin looks smoother immediately after applying oils. However, this is largely because oils reduce water loss from the skin, allowing the outermost layer to become better hydrated. Well-hydrated skin reflects light more evenly, making fine lines appear less noticeable for a few hours. Once the product is removed or the skin dries out, the appearance usually returns to normal.

In other words, the effect is cosmetic rather than corrective.

Dr Sachin Gupta, Dermatologist, Amrita Hospital

Dr Sachin Gupta, Consultant Dermatologist at Amrita Hospital in Faridabad, highlights the risks of relying on unverified natural remedies for wrinkles. According to him, the scientific evidence supporting such treatments remains limited and inconclusive. He explains that people seeking wrinkle reduction are more likely to benefit from treatments that have been properly evaluated in clinical studies and have demonstrated consistent effectiveness.

Does baby oil help repair wrinkles?

No. Baby oil does not repair wrinkles or reverse skin ageing. Baby oil primarily consists of highly refined mineral oil, with some formulations also containing vitamin E or fragrance. Mineral oil is an excellent occlusive moisturiser that reduces transepidermal water loss, helping the skin retain moisture and temporarily appear smoother.

However, moisturising the skin is not the same as repairing wrinkles. There is no clinical evidence that mineral oil stimulates collagen production, restores skin elasticity, or reverses established wrinkles. Any improvement in appearance is temporary and disappears once the hydration effect wears off.

Additionally, heavy oils may clog pores in some people, particularly those with oily or acne-prone skin, while fragranced products may irritate sensitive skin.

Dr Rashi Soni, Dermatologist

Dr Rashi Soni, Specialist Dermatologist at Rashi Hospital, Mumbai, explains, “Although baby oil may make the skin feel softer by locking in moisture, it should not be mistaken for an anti-ageing treatment. Wrinkles develop because of changes in collagen, elastin, sun damage, genetics and the natural ageing process. Moisturising oils cannot reverse these deeper structural changes. While the skin may temporarily look smoother, the underlying wrinkles remain unchanged.”

Does vitamin E oil repair wrinkles?

No. Vitamin E oil does not repair wrinkles or reverse skin ageing. Vitamin E is an antioxidant that contributes to normal skin health, particularly when obtained through a balanced diet. However, applying vitamin E oil directly from capsules is unlikely to produce meaningful wrinkle reduction.

Topical vitamin E is thick, greasy and poorly absorbed into deeper skin layers. It does not stimulate collagen synthesis or rebuild damaged skin. Although it may improve hydration for a short period, this does not translate into permanent wrinkle reduction.

In some individuals, particularly those with acne-prone or sensitive skin, vitamin E oil may clog pores or trigger allergic contact dermatitis.

Dr Ekansh Shekhar, Dermatologist

Dr Ekansh Shekhar, Dermatologist, Cosmetician, Trichologist and Consultant in Aesthetic Medicine, Lucknow, says, “Vitamin E can help maintain skin hydration and protect against oxidative stress, which contributes to overall skin health. However, it should not be considered a treatment that removes wrinkles. Any improvement people notice is usually related to better moisturisation and smoother skin texture rather than actual reversal of ageing. Established wrinkles require evidence-based skincare or dermatological procedures if significant improvement is desired.”

So the claim that baby oil mixed with vitamin E capsules can permanently remove wrinkles is false. While both ingredients can temporarily soften and moisturise the skin, they do not rebuild collagen, restore elastin, or reverse the structural changes that cause wrinkles.

Healthy skin ageing depends on consistent sun protection, a balanced skincare routine, and evidence-based treatments where appropriate. People seeking noticeable wrinkle reduction should consult a qualified dermatologist rather than relying on viral home remedies that promise permanent results without scientific support.
