The Claim

An Instagram post claims that  applying alum (known as fitkari in India) directly to acne spots can help “dry out” pimples, fade dark marks, and make the skin appear smoother.

Fact Check

Does alum actually kill the bacteria that cause pimples?

No. Alum does have mild antibacterial properties, but that doesn’t mean it can kill the bacteria responsible for acne , mainly Cutibacterium acnes (formerly Propionibacterium acnes).

In laboratory settings, alum (potassium aluminium sulphate) shows limited antibacterial effects against common pathogens. However, these studies are not specific to acne bacteria on human skin. The concentrations used in labs are much higher than what people typically apply topically. There are no clinical studies proving that alum can reduce acne or inflammation when used directly on the face.

At best, alum can temporarily shrink the appearance of pores or dry out surface oil because it’s an astringent, meaning it tightens tissues and reduces moisture. But this effect is cosmetic and short-lived. It does not target the deeper infection or inflammation that causes pimples.

In fact, dermatologists warn that excessively drying the skin can worsen acne by triggering the sebaceous glands to produce more oil, creating a rebound effect.

Dr Ekansh Shekhar, Dermatologist

Dr. Ekansh Shekhar, Dermatologist, Cosmetologist, Trichologist, and Aesthetic Medicine Consultant in Lucknow said, “Alum’s effectiveness against acne-causing bacteria is debated. It has antibacterial properties, disrupting bacterial cell membranes and reducing pH levels. However, there’s limited scientific evidence to confirm it kills bacteria like P. acnes. Alum may help reduce inflammation and dry out pimples, but it’s not a proven bacteria-killer.”

Will alum help fade dark marks or scars left by acne?

No, it’s not proven. The claimant in the video is claiming that alum can “lighten” dark spots due to its exfoliating and brightening properties, but there’s no solid evidence to support this.

Scientific research on alum’s skin-lightening potential is extremely limited. A few studies have explored its use in reducing melanin production in lab conditions, but these findings don’t translate into safe or effective results for humans. Moreover, alum’s drying and irritating nature can cause post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, the very problem people often try to treat.

Over time, continuous use of alum may damage the skin barrier, making it more prone to uneven tone, redness, or even tiny chemical burns. Safe, evidence-based options for fading acne marks include ingredients like niacinamide, azelaic acid, and topical retinoids, all backed by dermatological research.

Is alum safe to use on facial skin, especially repeatedly?

No, it’s not considered safe for facial application. Alum is a natural salt compound that can irritate delicate facial skin. It’s sometimes used after shaving  because of its antiseptic and tightening effects, but even then, it’s applied briefly and only on small areas of tougher skin.

Repeatedly applying alum on the face, especially near sensitive areas like the eyes, mouth, or nose, can lead to:

  • Redness and irritation
  • Excessive dryness and flaking
  • Burning or stinging sensations
  • Long-term sensitivity or dermatitis

A report published in the Journal of Dermatological Treatment notes that natural mineral salts like alum can disturb the skin’s acid mantle, the thin protective layer that keeps bacteria out and moisture in. Once that barrier is compromised, the skin becomes more vulnerable to inflammation and infections.

If you have acne-prone or sensitive skin, using harsh astringents like alum can worsen your condition instead of improving it.

Yes, there are several safe and effective options. Dermatologists and health authorities such as the NHS and the British Association of Dermatologists recommend clinically tested ingredients for treating acne and dark spots. Some of these include:

  • Benzoyl peroxide: Kills acne-causing bacteria and helps unclog pores.
  • Salicylic acid: Gently exfoliates and removes dead skin cells, preventing clogged pores.
  • Topical retinoids: Promote cell turnover, fade marks, and reduce future breakouts.
  • Azelaic acid: Has both antibacterial and brightening properties, effective for acne and pigmentation.

Unlike alum, these products have been tested for safety, efficacy, and skin compatibility. They also come in regulated formulations that ensure consistent results without unnecessary risks. If over-the-counter options don’t help, a dermatologist can prescribe stronger topical or oral treatments.
