An Instagram video talks about magical alkaline water and its extreme benefits. The video claims that drinking alkaline water can reverse sugar and blood pressure. We fact checked and found this claim to be Mostly False.
We have attached a screenshot of how the video looks at the time of publishing the story.
What is alkaline water?
Alkaline water is water that has been treated to increase its pH level, making it less acidic and more basic on the pH scale. The pH scale ranges from zero to 14, with seven considered neutral. This water typically has a pH level above seven.
Can we make alkaline water at home?
Yes, you can make alkaline water at home using various methods. Some common ways include adding a small amount of baking soda to water, squeezing lemon juice into water, using pH drops or alkaline water drops, or investing in a water ionizer. However, it’s essential to be cautious with quantities and follow instructions to avoid excessive alkalinity and potential health issues.
Can the consumption of lemon, mint , cucumber, coriander and carrot infused water alkalize water and help replace medicines?
No. Water having lemon, mint, cucumber, coriander (dhaniya), and carrot may have a refreshing taste. But it is important to note that the concept of alkalizing water through these ingredients is not scientifically proven, except lemon.
These natural ingredients can add flavour and certain nutrients to your water, but they do not significantly impact the overall pH or alkalinity of the water. The body’s internal pH is tightly regulated, and consuming such infused water is unlikely to have a substantial effect on the body’s pH levels.
What are the benefits of alkaline water?
Alkaline water has been linked to numerous controversial claims. But it is crucial to acknowledge that scientific support for many of these assertions is often lacking or inconclusive. Some of the disputed assertions put forth by proponents of alkaline water include:
- Improved Hydration
- Antioxidant Properties
- pH Balance
- Improves Bone Health
- Improves Digestive Health
Can drinking alkaline water replace the need for medication?
Not exactly. Drinking alkaline water is not a substitute for medication. While maintaining a balanced pH level in the body is important for overall health, it is essential to understand that certain medical conditions require specific medications prescribed by healthcare professionals.
Alkaline water has a higher pH level than regular tap water, and some proponents claim it can neutralise acidity in the body and provide health benefits. However, there is limited scientific evidence to support these claims. The human body has sophisticated mechanisms to regulate its pH levels, and the impact of alkaline water on these mechanisms is generally considered to be minimal.
Can drinking alkaline water help reverse diabetes and maintain high blood pressure?
Not exactly. The effects of drinking alkaline water on diabetes and high blood pressure are not definitively established. So, people should approach such a claim with caution. While some studies suggest potential benefits, we need more research to draw a clear conclusion.
Some studies, as mentioned in the previous information, have indicated that alkaline ionized water (AIW) might have positive effects on blood glucose levels in animal models of diabetes. However, these findings are not conclusive. We need a more robust clinical research on humans to determine the effectiveness and safety of AIW in managing diabetes.
High Blood Pressure:
The relationship between alkaline water and blood pressure is also unclear. Some proponents suggest that the alkalinity of the water could have a positive impact on blood pressure. But scientific evidence supporting this claim is limited.
It is important to note that individual responses to alkaline water can vary. So, relying solely on alkaline water to address health issues may not be a comprehensive or proven solution.
Diabetes and high blood pressure management typically involve a combination of lifestyle changes, dietary modifications, and, in some cases, medication.
Dr Ayush Chandra, a Diabetologist and Founder of Nivaran Health in Delhi NCR informs, “Managing diabetes involve appropriate medications or insulin therapy under professional guidance. Additionally, it needs a well-rounded approach, including a balanced diet rich in macro and micronutrients, regular physical activity, sufficient water intake, mental well-being, and consistent monitoring of blood sugar levels.
Dr Shalin Nagori, Consultant Pathologist and Industrial Physician says, “The impact of alkaline water on blood pressure is unclear. Also, scientific evidence is limited. Blood pressure management involves various factors, and it is better to consult with a healthcare professional for personalized advice”.
