Fact Check

Can ajwain, ginger, jaggery and turmeric bring periods in one day?

No. Periods do not start simply because we eat a hot or “warming” food. Menstruation is controlled by a delicate hormone cycle involving the brain, ovaries and uterus. In a usual cycle, hormones first prepare the uterine lining for a possible pregnancy. If pregnancy does not happen, hormone levels fall, and this triggers the lining to shed as menstrual bleeding.

So, for a period to come, the body has to reach that hormonal stage. A spice mix cannot shortcut this entire process in 24 hours. Ajwain may help with gas or bloating. Ginger may help nausea or cramps. Turmeric contains curcumin, which has anti-inflammatory properties. Jaggery is mainly sugar. None of these ingredients has been proven to reliably trigger menstrual bleeding in one day.

Sometimes, people drink such mixtures and get their period soon after. But that does not prove the remedy worked. The period may have already been due. This is a common timing mistake: the remedy gets the credit, but the body was already about to bleed.

Soumam Dutta, PhD Scholar (Nutrition), ICMR NIN

Soumam Dutta, PhD Scholar (Nutrition) at the Department of Endocrinology, ICMR-National Institute of Nutrition, Hyderabad, explains that diet alone cannot trigger periods instantly because menstruation is a complex biological process controlled by hormones such as FSH, LH, oestrogen and progesterone. However, he notes that unhealthy eating patterns and poor lifestyle habits can negatively affect menstrual health, which is why maintaining a balanced and nutritious diet is important for overall menstrual well-being.

Can these ingredients affect the uterus or hormones?

Not in a reliable period-inducing way. Some herbs and spices are popularly called “emmenagogues”, meaning substances believed to stimulate menstrual flow. However, belief is not the same as proof. For a substance to be accepted medically, we need good human studies showing that it works safely and consistently. Such evidence is lacking for this particular mixture.

Ginger and turmeric have been studied more for period pain than for inducing periods. Ginger may help reduce menstrual cramps in some people because it can influence inflammatory chemicals involved in pain. Turmeric may also have anti-inflammatory effects. But reducing cramps is very different from making a late period arrive.

Jaggery does not regulate ovulation or correct hormonal imbalance. Ajwain is often used for digestion, but there is no convincing clinical evidence that it can bring menstruation within a day. Taking large amounts may cause acidity, stomach irritation or discomfort in some people.

Dr Anita Gupta

Dr Anita Gupta, Gynecologist, Associate Director at Fortis La Femme, New Delhi, advises, that the most important step in managing irregular periods is identifying and treating the underlying medical or gynaecological cause. She explains that, in many cases, gynaecologists may prescribe hormonal medicines to help regulate the menstrual cycle effectively.

What should someone do if periods are late?

First, take a pregnancy test if pregnancy is possible. This is the safest first step. If the test is negative and the period is only a few days late, waiting a little may be reasonable, especially if there has been stress, illness, travel, poor sleep or lifestyle disruption.

However, if periods are repeatedly irregular, absent for three months, unusually heavy, very painful, or associated with symptoms like unusual discharge, pelvic pain, dizziness, acne, excess facial hair, sudden weight gain, or hair fall, it is better to consult a doctor. These signs may point towards PCOS, thyroid imbalance, anaemia, fibroids, infection or other hormonal concerns.

A dietitian can support menstrual health through balanced meals, adequate protein, iron-rich foods, blood sugar control, healthy fats and lifestyle correction. But even diet works gradually. It does not act like an instant switch.

Anurupa Bose, Nutritionist

Nutritionist Anurupa Bose highlights that irregular periods can happen due to several reasons, including age-related changes, hormonal conditions such as PCOD and thyroid disorders, poor sleep, stress, and lack of physical activity. She explains that maintaining a balanced diet, limiting sugary and ultra-processed foods, and exercising regularly can support hormonal balance and help improve menstrual regularity. According to her, these lifestyle habits may also influence long-term reproductive health and fertility.

So ajwain, ginger, jaggery and turmeric cannot be trusted to induce periods in one day. They may have small supportive roles in digestion, inflammation or period pain, but they do not replace hormonal evaluation or medical care.

If a period is late, the body is giving a signal. Do not silence that signal with random remedies. Check pregnancy first, observe the pattern, and seek medical help if delays keep happening. Periods are controlled by hormones not by a one-day kitchen drink.
