Quick Take
A social media post suggests that drinking a special tea made of coriander, arjun bark and curry leaves prevent heart attacks. We fact checked and found the claim to be false.

The Claim
An Instagram post claims that if you truly love your parents or grandparents, you should give them this herbal tea, as it can help prevent heart attacks.
The post says that boil 3 tsp coriander seeds, 1 tsp Arjun ki chaal, and 5–6 curry leaves in 2–3 cups of water for 7–8 minutes. Strain and drink, preferably on an empty stomach in the morning or before bedtime. This is claimed to prevent heart attacks.

Fact Check
Can this herbal tea actually prevent heart attacks?
No. It cannot prevent heart attacks. A heart attack (myocardial infarction) happens when blood flow to a part of the heart muscle is suddenly blocked. This blockage is usually caused by rupture of a cholesterol-rich plaque inside the coronary arteries, followed by clot formation.
This process develops silently over many years. It is driven by risk factors such as:
- High LDL (“bad”) cholesterol
- High blood pressure
- Diabetes
- Smoking
- Obesity
- Chronic inflammation and stress
For any food or drink to prevent a heart attack, it would need to significantly reduce plaque formation, stabilise existing plaques, and prevent clotting. There is no clinical evidence showing that this herbal tea can do all of this.
At best, it may support general heart health, but it cannot act as a protective shield against a sudden cardiac event.

Dr Almas Fatma, a General Physician from Navi Mumbai, highlights that preventing heart attacks begins with small, consistent daily choices. Following a balanced diet, staying physically active, and avoiding smoking are key steps in protecting heart health. Regular health check-ups are equally important to monitor and manage conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes, and high cholesterol. Even simple changes, such as reducing stress and limiting alcohol intake, can make a meaningful difference over time. After all, prevention is always better than treatment.
Adding to this, Dr Naresh Kumar Monigari, Director of the Cath Lab and Consultant Interventional Cardiologist at Renova Century Hospitals, Hyderabad, stresses the importance of regular cardiac screenings, especially for individuals with a family history of coronary artery disease (CAD). Early detection of silent heart conditions can help prevent serious complications. He also emphasises adopting healthy habits like avoiding tobacco, maintaining an ideal body weight, keeping blood pressure under control, and practising stress management techniques to reduce overall heart risk.
Does Terminalia arjuna (Arjun ki chaal) provide real heart benefits?
Yes, but limited. It may support heart function, not prevent heart attacks. Arjun bark has been used in traditional medicine for centuries. It contains bioactive compounds such as flavonoids, tannins, and saponins, which are believed to have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects.
Some small clinical studies suggest that it may:
- Improve cardiac muscle strength
- Help reduce symptoms of stable angina
- Support mild blood pressure reduction
- Improve lipid profile slightly
However, these studies are limited in size and quality. They do not prove that Arjun bark can prevent heart attacks or replace standard cardiac treatment. From a medical perspective, it can be considered a supportive adjunct, not a primary preventive therapy.
Do coriander seeds and curry leaves contribute meaningfully to heart protection?
Partially. They may help risk factors, but not directly prevent heart attacks. Coriander seeds contain compounds that may help:
- Lower blood sugar levels
- Improve lipid metabolism
- Provide antioxidant effects
Curry leaves are rich in carbazole alkaloids and antioxidants, which may:
- Help reduce oxidative stress
- Support cholesterol regulation
- Improve insulin sensitivity
These effects are beneficial because they target risk factors for heart disease. However, the impact is generally mild and requires consistent, long-term dietary intake.
Importantly, these ingredients do not directly:
- Remove arterial plaque
- Prevent plaque rupture
- Stop clot formation in coronary arteries
So while they contribute to overall health, they are not powerful enough to prevent heart attacks on their own.
Does boiling these ingredients together make the remedy more effective?
No. It does not create a medically proven formulation. Boiling helps extract water-soluble compounds from these ingredients, which is why such decoctions are common in traditional practices. However, from a scientific standpoint:
- The exact dose of active compounds is unknown
- The concentration varies each time
- There is no standardisation or quality control
In medicine, treatments are effective because they are precisely measured, tested, and standardised. This herbal tea does not meet those criteria.
So while it may deliver small amounts of beneficial compounds, it does not become a clinically reliable or therapeutic formulation.
Does drinking it on an empty stomach or before bed improve its effect?
No. Timing does not significantly change its benefits. There is no scientific evidence to suggest that consuming this tea on an empty stomach enhances absorption in a way that impacts heart health. Similarly drinking it at night does not provide additional cardiovascular protection.
These recommendations are largely based on traditional beliefs rather than modern clinical evidence. In reality, overall dietary patterns and lifestyle matter far more than timing.
Can depending on this tea delay proper heart care?
Yes. This is a serious concern. Believing that a simple home remedy can prevent heart attacks may lead people to:
- Ignore early warning signs like chest pain or breathlessness
- Delay medical check-ups
- Avoid or stop prescribed medications
This can be dangerous, especially for individuals with existing risk factors like hypertension, diabetes, or high cholesterol. Heart disease often progresses silently, and prevention requires active monitoring and evidence-based care, not passive reliance on a single remedy.
What actually works to prevent heart attacks?
A combination of lifestyle changes and medical care works best. Strong scientific evidence supports the following strategies:
- Reducing LDL cholesterol through diet and medications, if needed
- Controlling blood pressure and blood sugar
- Eating a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, and healthy fats
- Engaging in regular physical activity
- Avoiding smoking and tobacco
- Maintaining a healthy weight
- Managing stress and ensuring adequate sleep
Medications like statins, antihypertensives, and antiplatelet drugs have been proven to significantly reduce the risk of heart attacks, something no herbal tea has demonstrated.
