Quick Take
A social media post claims that a homemade coffee scrub can instantly whiten skin and remove tanning. We fact checked this claim and found that it is mostly false.

The Claim
An Instagram video suggests that a paste made using two spoons of coffee, one spoon each of rice flour, brown sugar, turmeric, honey, and body wash can completely remove tanning. The video also claims that it can address dark complexion and pigmentation, making the skin instantly white and spotless in just a few minutes. Repeating this scrub three times a week will give guaranteed results.

Fact Check
Can a coffee scrub instantly whiten skin and remove all pigmentation?
No, it cannot. Coffee is good for the skin and does have exfoliating properties, which can help remove dead skin cells and give a temporary glow. However, there is no evidence that coffee or any of the other listed ingredients in this mix can “instantly whiten” the skin or completely erase pigmentation.
Pigmentation happens deeper in the skin and involves melanin, the natural pigment that gives skin its colour. Scrubs only work on the surface. Treating pigmentation needs regular sun protection, proper skincare, and sometimes medical help. A 2018 study showed that very small amounts of caffeine, taken by mouth, helped protect skin from damage in mice and lab tests. It may slow ageing but does not whiten skin. So, while a scrub might make your skin feel smoother and look slightly brighter, it won’t make you fair or instantly remove dark spots.

We spoke with Dr Ekansh Shekhar, Dermatologist, Cosmetologist, Trichologist, and Aesthetic Medicine Consultant in Lucknow, for his thoughts on using scrubs for skin whitening. He says, “While scrubs like the coffee mixture may help improve the appearance of your skin temporarily, it’s important to understand that no scrub or natural remedy can drastically change your skin tone. The focus should be on maintaining healthy, radiant skin rather than striving for fairness. Embrace your natural skin colour and prioritise skincare routines that nourish and protect your skin.”

We reached out to Dr Annusuiya Gohil, MD Scholar at the All India Institute of Ayurveda, for her expert opinion on whether scrubs can whiten skin. She says, “Skin tone is primarily determined by genetics, along with environmental factors. While you can brighten your skin, you cannot change your natural skin colour—it can only be enhanced. Factors like ageing, harsh conditions, and diet can cause skin to appear dull, but you can work towards restoring its original glow. However, topical products won’t alter your inherent complexion.”
Dr Gohil adds, “Certain ingredients may help improve skin brightness or reduce pigmentation, but they won’t change your natural skin colour.”
Similarly, claims that a licorice and curd face pack can make your skin fair are also misleading and not backed by strong scientific evidence.
Do turmeric, rice flour, and honey remove tanning or dark complexion?
Not really, and certainly not in minutes. Turmeric has anti-inflammatory properties and has been used in traditional remedies to brighten skin, but it doesn’t act like bleach. Rice flour and honey may gently exfoliate and soothe the skin, yet they lack strong, proven effects on pigmentation in such a short duration. Interestingly, rice flour contains phytic acid, a natural compound that may help lighten dark spots and reduce acne. A 2019 study found that phytic acid offers similar benefits to glycolic and salicylic acids, but with much less irritation, making it a gentler option for improving uneven skin tone over time.
Tanning occurs due to UV exposure. The skin darkens to protect itself. Only regular use of sunscreen, along with time and proper skin care, can help reverse tanning. These ingredients might mildly improve skin texture over time, but they cannot remove tanning in a few minutes.
Can this mixture make skin “white” or drastically change skin tone?
No, skin colour is determined by genetics. No scrub, cream, or natural remedy can change your basic skin tone. Melanin is responsible for skin colour, and trying to “whiten” the skin with such mixtures feeds into colourist myths. Claims like “even Koreans will be jealous” are not only misleading but also promote unrealistic and racially insensitive beauty standards.
Similarly, there is an obsession with lightening the feet as well. Claims that a home remedy can instantly make your feet fair are equally misleading and unrealistic.
Can repeating this scrub three times a week give long-lasting results?
No, frequent scrubbing may do more harm than good. Scrubbing too often can damage the skin’s natural barrier, making it dry, sensitive, and more prone to irritation. The skin needs gentle care and sun protection, not aggressive exfoliation multiple times a week. Long-lasting brightness or spot reduction cannot be achieved this way.
THIP Media Take
The claim that a homemade coffee scrub can instantly whiten skin and remove tanning is mostly false. This Instagram post promises dramatic and unrealistic results that are not backed by science. Some of the ingredients may give a temporary glow or smoother skin. But, they cannot remove pigmentation or tanning in minutes. More importantly, no scrub can change your natural skin tone or make you “instantly fair.” Such claims promote harmful beauty ideals and give false hope. Always choose skin care methods that are safe, gradual, and based on evidence, not viral promises.
