Fact Check

What is psoriasis?

Psoriasis is an autoimmune condition that causes raised, scaly patches on the skin due to systemic inflammation. In this condition, the skin cells multiply up to 10 times faster than normal. This leads to a build-up of erythematous plaques (bumpy red patches) with a covering of silvery scales (white scales). The most commonly affected areas are the scalp, knees, elbows, and lower back. However, they can grow anywhere. This is not a contagious disease and doesn’t spread from one person to another.

What is eczema?

Eczema, or atopic dermatitis, is a chronic inflammatory skin condition. It is characterized by red, itchy, and dry skin that can sometimes develop into rashes or blisters. It often appears in patches on the body, particularly in areas such as the face, hands, elbows, and knees.

We do not know the exact cause of eczema. But it is believed to involve a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Symptoms can vary in severity, ranging from mild discomfort to intense itching and pain. Factors such as stress, dry climate, certain foods, irritants (like soaps or detergents), and allergens (such as pollen or pet dander) can trigger or worsen eczema flare-ups.

Can a herbal spray treat psoriasis and eczema?

Not exactly. There is no scientific evidence to support the claim that herbal sprays can treat psoriasis and eczema. However, some people may find that herbal sprays provide relief from the symptoms of these conditions. Also, we cannot confirm the effectiveness of the claimed herbal spray for treating eczema and psoriasis since we do not have access to its ingredient list. The product endorsed in the advertisement directed us to an e-commerce page that is no longer available (‘Page not found’). Therefore, we are unable to provide any further information or comment on it.

We have not fact-checked the effectiveness of the claimed herbal spray. We have only fact-checked the marketing claims related to the product, especially their content.

That said, the video falsely shows the spray removing severe cases of skin infection which is usually not the case. Psoriasis and eczema are complex conditions with underlying factors that involve the immune system, genetic predisposition, and the skin’s barrier function. Our research informs that there is no cure for psoriasis or eczema. But there are treatments that can help to control the symptoms. These includes a combination of moisturizers, topical corticosteroids, immunomodulators, and other medications prescribed by healthcare professionals.

Some common treatments for psoriasis include topical medications, phototherapy, and systemic therapy. Similarly, common treatments for eczema include topical medications, oral medications, moisturizers, medicated baths and avoidance of triggers.

Besides this, we ran a Google Reverse Image Search and found no evidence showing the professional experience of the people in the claimed video.

Under the title “Can a mist cure spinal and shoulder pain?“, THIP MEDIA has previously exposed another deceptive marketing assertion made by another product from the same company.

Herbal sprays may offer temporary relief or moisturization. However, it is essential to approach their use cautiously and consult a dermatologist or healthcare provider before relying solely on herbal remedies. They can guide suitable treatment options, including evidence-based medications and therapies that have been proven effective in managing psoriasis and eczema.

Dr Aseem Sharma (Dermatologist)

To this, Dr Aseem Sharma, DNB (Dermatology), MBA & FMUHS (Trichology & Hair Disorders) adds, “While certain herbal ingredients may have soothing properties, it’s important to note that psoriasis and eczema are chronic conditions that often require a multifaceted approach for management. Herbal sprays may provide temporary relief. However, they are not a long term or guaranteed treatment. Consulting a dermatologist can ensure proper diagnosis and personalized treatment. Unless the immune reaction is targeted, most Psoriasis treatments fail.”

It’s worth noting that the herbal products available in the market can vary widely in their formulation and quality. If you choose to try an herbal spray or any other herbal remedy, it’s crucial to research the ingredients, potential side effects, and interactions with any existing medications you may be taking.

Swati Watwani

Dr Swati Watwani, Dermatologist and Medical Director, Co-Founder & Chief Consultant, Persianlily – Skin/Hair/Aesthetics/Ayurveda Clinic, informs, “Psoriasis and eczema are inflammatory autoimmune skin disorders. For them there is currently no cure. However, individuals can manage their symptoms through treatments and natural remedies. Some evidence suggests that certain herbal treatments and sprays may assist in alleviating symptoms. They do it by reducing skin cell growth or formation. However, several factors can influence the effectiveness of these treatments. These include the severity of the condition, diagnosis and the percentage of the body’s surface area affected. Other factors include the degree of disease severity, the involvement of multiple organs, etc.”

We further asked Dr Watwani about whether herbal sprays can cure skin conditions completely. To this, she replied, “Herbal sprays derived from various herbal sources are currently gaining popularity over synthetic drugs. The primary reason for the increased use of herbal sprays can be the perception of their relatively lower risk of toxic side effects compared to conventional allopathic medications. However, comparing their effectiveness requires extensive research and evidence. This must cover parameters such as evaluating anti-inflammatory and anti-proliferative activities, among other factors, to reach a conclusive decision. These herbal sprays may have some utility. However, the lack of comprehensive research and evidence makes it uncertain whether they can effectively manage and alleviate symptoms. Also, we do not know whether they can significantly slow down the progression of the disease. We need more studies to gather more conclusive evidence in this regard.”
