Fact Check
What are COVID Boosters?
A COVID booster shot is an additional dose of a vaccine given after the protection provided by the original shot(s) has begun to decrease over time. The booster helps people maintain strong protection from severe coronavirus disease.
What is the current status of COVID booster in India?
In India, as of Feb 15, 22, around 55% of the population is fully vaccinated (i.e., received at least two doses); accounting to 76 crore of its population.
In fact, the third dose or the second booster has also been made available to the front line workers and adults aged 60 or above with comorbidities from Jan 10, 2022 and till now 1.2% of India’s population (1.8 Crore) is vaccinated with the third dose.
According to the new guidelines, the dose is given 9 months/39 weeks after completion of the second dose of COVID Vaccine.
Are COVID boosters destroying the immune system?
There’s no evidence booster shots ‘destroy’ the immune system. In fact, they do the opposite, boosters increase neutralising antibodies to COVID which helps protect against infection, hospitalisation and death.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, vaccines cause the immune system to produce antibodies, which help fight and build immunity to pathogens like the coronavirus. Infections also cause the body to produce antibodies, but vaccines are a way to build immunity without getting sick.
