Fact Check

What is tinea pedis and tinea manuum?

Tinea pedis, commonly known as athlete’s foot, is a fungal infection that usually affects the skin between the toes, while tinea manuum affects the hands. Both infections are due to dermatophytes, a group of fungi that thrive in warm, moist environments. These infections often present as red, scaly, and itchy patches on the skin and can spread if left untreated.

Why am I getting fungus on my fingers?

Fungal infections on the fingers, like tinea manuum, are often due to direct contact with contaminated surfaces, excessive sweating, or a weakened immune system. Poor hygiene, exposure to communal areas such as gyms or swimming pools, and the use of tight or non-breathable gloves can also increase the risk. These infections can spread easily from other parts of the body, such as the feet, especially if the same towel or clothing is used.

Is guava leaves good for fungal infection?

Guava leaves have been traditionally used in various cultures for their antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. The leaves are rich in bioactive compounds like quercetin, kaempferol, and myricetin, which give them strong medicinal properties. According to a 2021 review, they exhibit antioxidant, anticancer, antidiabetic, and antimicrobial effects. These leaves are used in traditional medicine to manage diabetes, combat oxidative stress, and fight bacterial and fungal infections. However, the current evidence is not yet strong enough (much of the evidence uses lab studies or animal studies) to fully confirm their effectiveness, and we need more research, especially in clinical settings.

Are neem leaves good for skin fungal infection?

Neem leaves are very popular in traditional medicine, especially in Ayurveda, for their antifungal, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory properties. Laboratory studies show that neem extracts can inhibit the growth of certain fungi, including those responsible for skin infections. A 2016 review highlights the diverse medicinal properties of neem (Azadirachta indica), attributing its benefits to compounds like azadirachtin and nimbolide. The review notes neem’s antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer activities, as well as its role in liver protection and wound healing. However, it’s important to note that many of these studies were conducted in laboratories (in vitro) or on animals (in vivo). Even though the findings are promising, we need more clinical trials on humans to confirm neem’s efficacy and safety for medical use

Can neem and guava leaves’ ash treat fungal infections between fingers in just one night?

No, it doesn’t seem so. When neem and guava leaves are burned to create ash, the process destroys most of the active compounds that have antifungal properties. What’s left is primarily minerals and carbon residue, which do not carry the same medicinal benefits as the original plant material.

Neem and guava leaves have antifungal properties in their natural form. But, the benefits do not survive the burning process. The idea that mixing this ash with alum, aloe vera gel, coconut oil, and turmeric powder could cure a fungal infection overnight lacks scientific backing. And, the claim that the mixture can prevent any such infections for life is also an exaggeration. Fungal infections usually need consistent treatment with antifungal medications over several weeks. There is no evidence to support using neem or guava leaf ash as a reliable treatment for fungal infections. There is some evidence which suggests neem has the potential to treat athlete’s foot, due to its antifungal properties. But still, the neem leaf cannot treat fungal infection overnight.

Dr Sachin Gupta, Dermatologist, Amrita Hospital

We got valuable insights from Dr Sachin Gupta, a Dermatologist, from Amrita Hospital, Faridabad, regarding the use of home remedies for treating fungal infections on fingers. He states, “I always stress the importance of using treatments that are backed by science. Neem and guava leaves are popular for their supposed antifungal benefits, but there’s not enough strong evidence to say they really work, especially the way it is being claimed or for fast results. If you’re dealing with a stubborn or serious fungal infection, it’s important to use proper antifungal medicines and see a doctor to make sure it’s treated correctly and doesn’t get worse.”

Similarly, we debunked another social media post promoting a cream called “Leebord ointment” as a cure for ringworm.

Does neem leaf ash retain the medicinal benefits of neem leaves?

No, neem leaf ash does not retain the full medicinal benefits of neem leaves. The burning process destroys or significantly alters the bioactive compounds in neem leaves, such as azadirachtin, nimbin, and nimbolide, leaving behind mainly inorganic salts and minerals in the ash.

Chemical Composition:

  • Neem leaf ash: Contains mainly minerals and inorganic salts, with little bioactivity.
  • Neem leaves: Rich in compounds with antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, and anti-inflammatory properties.

Medicinal Benefits:

  • Neem leaf ash: May have minor antiseptic properties, but its medicinal value is much lower than that of neem leaves. It is primarily studied for agricultural uses, like soil stabilisation and plant growth.
  • Neem leaves: Used traditionally in medicine for their wide range of health benefits, including treatment for skin conditions and infections.

In summary, neem leaves are far more potent in medicinal applications. On the other hand, neem leaf ash has limited uses, mainly in agriculture rather than health.

What medicine is good for fungal infection in fingers?

For treating tinea manuum, a fungal infection on the hands, doctors usually recommend topical antifungal creams. This is to ensure fewer side effects than oral medications. Most treatments take about 4 to 6 weeks, though some newer options work faster. If the infection is severe, covers multiple areas, or doesn’t respond to creams, oral antifungals might be necessary. Steroids can help with severe itching or inflammation but should only be used for a short time alongside antifungal treatment.

Commonly prescribed antifungal agents include:

  • Clotrimazole
  • Miconazole
  • Terbinafine
  • Ketoconazole

These medications work by inhibiting the growth of fungi and should be applied directly to the affected area for several weeks, as directed by a healthcare professional.

THIP Media Take

The claim that the ash of neem and guava leaves can treat finger fungal infections overnight is unsubstantiated. These leaves may have antifungal properties, they are not a quick fix or a guaranteed cure or a foolproof prevention strategy for life. People also claim that onion and garlic can cure nail fungus, but this isn’t true. Beware of false claims promoting home remedies like neem fruit pulp oil for fast hair growth, or neem leaves for curing COVID-19. Trusting health claims from social media can do more harm than good, and delay proper treatment. We recommend proper medical treatment, including the use of antifungal medications, for effectively managing and curing fungal infections. Always consult a healthcare professional for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment.
