Fact Check

Does ginger and turmeric instantly cure a cough?

No, not really. There is no evidence to support the claim that ginger and turmeric can instantly cure a cough. While both ingredients have anti-inflammatory and soothing properties, these effects take time. A cough is often caused by viral infections, allergies, or throat irritation—issues that cannot be resolved instantly by any remedy.

Ginger, rich in gingerol, can help ease throat discomfort gradually. Similarly, turmeric’s active compound, curcumin, may reduce inflammation over time. However, curcumin has its limitations—it’s unstable, poorly absorbed by the body, and varies in composition across products. These factors make its effects gradual and inconsistent, further debunking the idea of an instant cure.

Dr Ubaid ur Rahman

We reached out to Dr Ubaid ur Rahman, General Physician, Holy Mission Clinic, New Delhi, for his perspective on ginger and turmeric for cough. He says, “While ginger and turmeric are great for soothing a sore throat and easing mild cough symptoms, they aren’t quick fixes. Both ingredients have anti-inflammatory properties that can help over time, but expecting an instant cure for a cough is unrealistic. It’s important to remember that a cough often signals an underlying issue, like a viral infection, and taking natural remedies should complement, not replace, proper medical treatment.”

Dr Anusha Dewan, General Physician and Public Health professional

We also got in touch with Dr Anusha Dewan, Practising General Physician and Public Health Professional, Jeevan Anmol Hospital, New Delhi, for her opinion on ginger and turmeric for cough. She states, “Ginger and turmeric can offer some relief for a cough, especially when used regularly to support your body’s healing process. However, they don’t work instantly. The effects are gradual and can help reduce inflammation or throat irritation. If a cough persists, it’s best to seek advice from a healthcare professional to rule out any more serious conditions.”

Similarly, another post claims home remedies can cure diseases without a hospital visit. However, they may offer temporary relief but cannot treat the underlying causes.

Can ginger and turmeric help relieve symptoms of a cold?

Yes, they can ease symptoms, but they are not a cure. Adding ginger and turmeric to your diet can provide comfort during a cold or cough. Ginger tea may reduce throat irritation, while turmeric can boost immunity. These remedies support your body’s natural healing but don’t directly address the underlying cause. If symptoms persist or worsen, it’s essential to consult a doctor to rule out serious conditions.

Apart from this, people also promote turmeric for blood purification, but this is scientifically inaccurate.

How long does it take for natural remedies to show effects?

Natural remedies like ginger and turmeric take time to show results. Bronchitis causes inflamed airways, and ginger may help by reducing inflammation and easing the cough. However, these benefits build up with consistent use. Similarly, turmeric may reduce the severity of cold symptoms over time. Expecting instant results is unrealistic and could delay the necessary medical treatment.

Are there risks in using ginger and turmeric for coughs?

Ginger and turmeric are generally safe, but they can cause side effects for some people. Overusing them may lead to digestive issues like heartburn or diarrhoea. Avoid excess turmeric if you take blood thinners or anti-diabetic medications. Ginger can interact with blood thinners, and turmeric may worsen gallbladder problems. Use these ingredients in moderation and consult a healthcare provider if you take medication or have chronic conditions.

What’s the best way to treat a cough or cold?

Rest, hydration, and timely medical advice are the most effective treatments.

For mild symptoms:

  • Stay hydrated: Warm fluids like herbal teas or soups can soothe the throat.
  • Rest: Give your body the time it needs to recover.
  • Steam inhalation: This can relieve congestion and coughing.
  • Over-the-counter remedies: Cough syrups or lozenges may provide temporary relief.

If a cough lasts over a week or worsens, consult a doctor. Conditions like bronchitis or pneumonia may require targeted treatments.

Viral claims like this can be misleading and delay proper care. Instead of falling for myths, stick to remedies that are supported by science and consult a doctor when necessary.

Similar to this, we have come across claims that cold cough home remedies can cure cold, cough, and fever in just one use. However, this is misleading.

THIP Media Take

The claim that ginger and turmeric can instantly cure a cough and cold is mostly false. While ginger and turmeric are beneficial for overall health and can help ease mild symptoms, the claim that they can instantly cure a cough is not supported by science. Trust proven treatments and avoid misinformation for better health outcomes.
