Glycemic index is a value that helps one to measure the amount of blood sugar raised by the consumption of a specific food.
Several factors influence the glycemic index of a food, including its nutrient composition, the ripeness, the processing method and the cooking method. It is a tool which can help in making good food choices, especially in diabetes. It can also help a person in losing weight by making healthier food choices.
Foods are classified into three categories based on the glycemic index, namely Low, Medium and High. They are ranked on a scale of 1-100.
The ratings of Glycemic Index are as follows-
- Low: 55 or less
- Medium: 56–69
- High: 70 or above
The lower the value of the glycemic index, the less impact it would have on your blood sugar levels.
However, not every single food item, vegetable or fruit has been studied. It is vital to know that the glycemic index will be different for each food, depending on how it’s processed or prepared, and then how each individual person responds to its consumption.
