Do cilantro reduces lead poisoning from the lungs?

Just In

Cilantro, which is also called coriander or dhania, comes under the category of cooling foods. It has been of great interest in research because of its potential to be used as a ‘reducing agent’ for the removal of lead from the lungs. Some studies suggest that cilantro reduces lead because of the chelating property that may help reduce the harmful effects of lead. Let us read further to dig the truth.

How does lead impact the lungs?

Lead can significantly affect lung health in direct mechanisms for both acute and chronic respiratory problems, leading to such damage. Some of the important effects are as follows:

Inflammation: Exposure to heavy metals through inhalation (cigarette, car, firecrackers smoke) causes inflammation in lung tissues. Thereby, lead can cause diseases like bronchitis, COPD or asthma.

Oxidative Stress: Heavy metals increase the formation of free radicals in the form of reactive oxygen species and thus cause oxidative stress, which may damage lung cells and tissues. This results in further deterioration of lung functioning and has been related to COPD development.

Fibrosis: For some heavy metals including lead, arsenic and silica, respiration over long periods causes pulmonary fibrosis. The term refers to the thickening and scarring of the lung tissue that tends to create difficulties while breathing.

Carcinogenic Effects: Lead has been identified as a human carcinogen. Long-term exposure to the pollutants enhances lung cancer and other cancers.

The presence of heavy metals in the lungs can bring about health complications, particularly in their interference with the lungs; hence there is a need to reduce exposure and monitor the air directly.

How does cilantro interact with heavy metals and protect the lungs?

Cilantro, also known as coriander, can help protect against damage from heavy metals like lead. Here’s how it works and why it might also be good for the lungs:

  1. Packed with Antioxidants: Cilantro contains natural compounds that fight free radicals—harmful molecules that can damage cells. This can help keep lung tissues healthy.
  2. Reduces Damage from Lead: When exposed to lead, the body can produce harmful substances and lose important protective enzymes. Cilantro helps improve these protective measures, reducing damage. Judging by this, cilantro reduces lead.
  3. Prevents Cell Damage: Cilantro can stop a process called lipid peroxidation, which damages cell membranes. This is especially important for the lungs, which need to stay intact for proper function.
  4. May Help with Inflammation: Cilantro can influence certain brain processes that might also help reduce inflammation in the lungs, supporting better breathing.
  5. Binds to Heavy Metals: Cilantro might help grab onto heavy metals, reducing their harmful effects on the body, including in the lungs.

In short, cilantro has properties that can protect the body from the harmful effects of heavy metals, making it worth exploring further for lung health!

What studies support cilantro’s lead detoxification effects?

A 2021 study indicates the effects of lead exposure on the human body, especially concerning the central nervous system and lungs. The accumulation of lead increases harmful chemical substances and decreases protective enzymes so the damage multiplies.

The seeds of dhania, which is also known as cilantro, were used to know these effects. The seeds were ground into powder and mixed in distilled water. This mixture was then kept aside at room temperature for 24 hours. Then it was heated at 65°C for 30 minutes. It was filtered and then concentrated, and under vacuum drying to provide a 5.9% extract. Supplementation of the same cilantro extract when given to subjects significantly depleted blood and tissue levels of lead. It lowered the markers of lead poisoning and increased the activity of the defensive enzymes of the body, thus suggesting a natural remedy for toxicological effects due to lead toxicity.

Does consuming cilantro help reduce lead poisoning?

Maybe. Its chelating properties have made the consumption of cilantro to be a proposed method that reduces lead levels in the body. Some research hints at the fact that cilantro helps promote detoxification within the human body but the evidence is still limited. Moreover, cilantro/dhania should not be treated as a form of main treatment for lead poisoning. Suspecting lead poisoning of any sort requires proper medical guidance from a medical practitioner for proper diagnosis and treatment.
