The words ‘ketogenic diet’ immediately throws up images of weight loss plans and claims of improving health.

Ketogenic diet is primarily used for children with epilepsy to help treat the condition and control episodes. The diet per se is high in fat, moderate in protein and is very low in carbohydrates, which is followed in every meal. This type of diet forces the body to utilize energy from fat rather than carbohydrates. The ketone bodies which are formed from fat breakdown replace glucose and help to fuel the brain. The increase in ketone bodies in the blood lowers the frequency of epileptic seizures.

“Foods that can be given to children with epilepsy include soy granules, soy rava, soy milk, soy dal, nuts like almonds, paneer, cheese, select vegetables, milk, curd”, says Dr Priya Karkera, Pediatric Nutritionist with several years of experience.  Other foods to include are ghee, butter, oils, eggs, spices, etc. “Sugar, fruits, rice, are a complete no-no in ketogenic diets”, adds Dr Karkera. Dals and pulses can be given in suitable quantities. Consult a qualified dietitian for an individualized ketogenic meal plan.

Ketogenic diets should be made palatable for children. Considering that a ketogenic diet offers less micronutrients than a normal diet, supplements like calcium, zinc, etc., would be necessary for the child with epilepsy. Consult your physician for prescriptions.
