Can Spearmint Tea help regulate menstrual cycles in women?

Just In

When your monthly cycle turns unpredictable, early one month, late the next, it can leave you feeling confused, frustrated, and often worried. Irregular periods are more than just a scheduling nuisance; they can signal an imbalance in your hormones, stress levels, or even hint at conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). In the search for natural remedies, one humble herb keeps cropping up: spearmint. But is spearmint tea just another wellness trend, or does it truly offer something for women struggling with irregular periods?

Let’s unravel the science and tradition behind spearmint tea and whether it really has any clout in supporting menstrual health.

How could spearmint tea influence a woman’s menstrual cycle?

Spearmint (Mentha spicata) has long been used in herbal medicine, but only recently has modern science started to explore its effects on hormones, especially those that regulate menstruation.

One key reason spearmint tea is believed to help with irregular cycles lies in its anti-androgenic properties. That’s a fancy way of saying it may help lower male hormones (like testosterone) in the body. Now, women naturally produce small amounts of testosterone, but when levels are too high, as seen in conditions like PCOS, periods can become irregular, infrequent, or stop altogether.

A 2010 study published in Phytotherapy Research looked at 42 women with hirsutism (excess facial or body hair caused by high androgens). Those who drank spearmint tea twice a day for five days during the follicular phase of their cycle (the first half of the menstrual cycle) showed a significant reduction in free testosterone and an increase in luteinising hormone (LH). LH plays a key role in ovulation and cycle regulation.

This study, along with earlier research from 2007, hints that regular consumption of spearmint tea could shift hormone levels in a way that nudges the body toward a more regular menstrual cycle.

Women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) often struggle with irregular or missed periods, which can make tracking fertility, or simply knowing when your period’s coming, a guessing game. PCOS is largely driven by hormonal imbalances, especially elevated levels of androgens.

Several studies have shown that spearmint may help reduce these androgen levels. In the 2007 study mentioned earlier, which involved 21 women with PCOS or hirsutism, researchers found that drinking spearmint tea twice daily for five days significantly reduced free and total testosterone levels.

While five days isn’t enough to regulate someone’s cycle completely, it provides a glimpse into spearmint’s potential. Lower testosterone means fewer PCOS symptoms, such as excess hair growth, acne, and possibly, improved ovulation and regular periods. However, longer-term studies are still needed to confirm whether this actually leads to consistent cycle regulation over time.

So, for women with PCOS, spearmint tea isn’t a cure, but it might offer a gentle nudge in the right direction when used alongside other evidence-based approaches like a balanced diet, regular exercise, and, where necessary, medication.

How much spearmint tea would a woman need to drink to see any benefits?

In most of the studies, participants drank two cups of spearmint tea per day, often brewed with 1 to 1.5 grams of dried spearmint leaves per cup. That’s not a lot, about a teaspoon of leaves in each cup.

The key here is consistency. You can’t expect to sip it once and see your periods fall back into line. It’s more about adding it to your daily routine for a few weeks or months and seeing how your body responds.

That said, always listen to your body. Herbal teas might be ‘natural’, but that doesn’t mean they’re risk-free in high amounts. Stick to the amounts studied, and talk to your doctor first, especially if you have any existing conditions or are taking medication.

Are there any risks or side effects to drinking spearmint tea for this purpose?

For most people, spearmint tea is considered safe in moderate amounts, that is, 1–2 cups a day. But, like with all herbs, more isn’t always better.

There are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Hormone-sensitive conditions: If you’re someone whose body is sensitive to hormonal changes, even natural shifts caused by herbs can have effects. Always check with your healthcare provider.
  • Potential drop in libido: Spearmint’s anti-androgen effects might, in some people, lead to a slight dip in sexual desire, though this isn’t widely reported.
  • Possible liver toxicity in extreme doses: This hasn’t been observed with tea, but concentrated extracts taken in large amounts could have liver effects, so it’s best to avoid going overboard.

Also, it’s important to note that no herb, including spearmint, should replace professional treatment. If you’re dealing with long-term menstrual irregularities, get a proper diagnosis and work with a qualified medical provider.

Can spearmint tea alone regulate periods without other lifestyle changes?

Not at all. This is where expectations need a bit of a reset. While spearmint tea shows promise in lowering androgens, which may, in turn, help periods become more regular, it’s not a magic fix-all. If your diet is poor, stress is through the roof, or you’re dealing with insulin resistance or thyroid problems, a cup of tea won’t undo all that.

For best results, spearmint tea should be part of a bigger lifestyle approach: eating more whole foods, moving your body regularly, managing stress, and sleeping well. That’s when you’re most likely to see the biggest improvement in hormonal balance and period regularity.

Think of it this way, spearmint tea is a helpful passenger, not the driver.

Conclusion

Nature has always had its quiet healers, and spearmint might just be one of them. Backed by promising research and centuries of traditional use, this refreshing herb is more than just a pleasant tea flavour. For women navigating the ups and downs of irregular periods, especially those influenced by hormonal imbalance, spearmint tea might offer a small yet meaningful step toward balance. If you choose to try it, do so mindfully, and always in conversation with your healthcare provider. Your menstrual health deserves attention, care, and a plan that makes sense for your body.
