Anise seed, also known as aniseeds, is a spice that has been used for centuries in many cultures around the world. It has a sweet, licorice-like flavour and aroma that makes it a popular ingredient in both sweet and savoury dishes. However, anise seed is not only valued for its culinary uses, but also for its numerous health benefits. It has been used for centuries to help with digestive issues, respiratory problems, and to promote overall wellness. In addition, anise seed has a rich history and has been used in traditional medicine and cuisine in many countries, including India.

Anise seeds have played significant roles in various cultures and cuisines worldwide, with their unique flavours and potential health benefits making them stand out in the spice world. Anise seed can be ingested in various ways including as a powder or in the form of volatile oil. The extensive usage of these spices across cultures is a testament to their versatility and importance, and they continue to be relevant in today’s world.

Health benefits of aniseeds

Help in managing diabetes

Anise seed powder may have potential in managing type 2 diabetes mellitus, according to a study involving 20 individuals who were given a higher than typical daily dose of 5 grams for 60 days. Results showed a significant reduction in fasting blood glucose levels, total cholesterol, and triglycerides, along with increased levels of antioxidant factors and decreased levels of oxidative stress. In contrast, the control group experienced an increase in fasting blood glucose levels and no change in cholesterol and triglyceride levels after 60 days. Studies also showed that anise seed oil increased glucose absorption by the jejunum and interfered with the Na+-K+ ATPase enzyme, which is required for glucose transport. The combination of bioactive compounds in anise seeds may contribute to their antidiabetic and hypolipidemic effects, indicating the potential use of anise seeds in treating hyperglycemia.

Help treat symptoms of IBS

Another study was conducted on patients with functional dyspepsia who were given 9 grams of anise seed powder per day for 4 weeks. The results showed that those who received the anise seed reported less discomfort, pain, bloating, and early satiety compared to those who received a placebo. Their quality of life was also significantly improved. However, more research is needed to understand the specific ways in which anise seed affects the gastrointestinal system and the prevalence of Helicobacter pylori infection. Anise seed oil was also tested on individuals with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and was found to significantly improve symptoms such as diarrhoea, bloating, and abdominal pain compared to a placebo. Anise seed oil was even more effective than Colpermin IBS relief capsules containing peppermint oil. Further research is necessary to fully understand the effectiveness of anise seed in managing IBS.

May help reduce migraine attack

In a study involving individuals (n=22) with migraine headaches, an anise seed oil cream was applied to their temporal and forehead regions for 6 weeks. The use of the anise seed oil cream resulted in a significant reduction in the frequency and duration of attacks compared to a placebo cream, although it did not reduce the severity of the attacks. In another study, individuals (n=26) with chronic rhinosinusitis without polyps were instructed to apply nasal drops containing 200 μg of anise seed water extract in almond oil to each nostril every 12 hours for 4 weeks. This treatment significantly improved sinonasal symptoms and reduced inflamed paranasal sinus mucosa as measured by computed tomography scans, similarly to treatment with the corticosteroid drug fluticasone. However, anise seed drops were found to be significantly more effective than fluticasone in reducing rhinological symptoms.

May help reduce hot flashes in premenopausal syndrome

In two studies, an alcohol extract of anise seed powder was given to participants. In one study, women experiencing menopausal hot flashes were given the extract for 4 weeks and showed a significant reduction in the severity and frequency of hot flashes, which continued for 2 weeks after the treatment ended. In another study, college-aged women were given the extract before and after two menstrual cycles and showed a significant decrease in premenstrual syndrome symptoms compared to a placebo group.

Conclusion

Anise seed is a versatile spice that offers both delicious flavour and a range of health benefits. From aiding digestion to promoting respiratory health, anise seed has been used for centuries to support overall wellness. In addition to its medicinal properties, anise seed has a rich cultural history and is a popular ingredient in cuisines around the world, including in India. Whether you’re adding it to desserts, savoury dishes, or using it for its medicinal properties, anise seed is a valuable spice to have in your kitchen. Its unique flavour and numerous health benefits make it a wonderful addition to any diet.
